St. Leonard’s FC aims to provide the opportunity for all within the community to play and get involved with the game of football.
At present St Leonard’s football club plays the majority of the home games in Ballycullane. This pitch was newly constructed over the last number and this is only the second season that games are being played there. There is also another pitch adjacent to the football pitch, which is being used by the GAA. A fantastic new complex building overlooks both pitches. This complex comprises of fully fitted dressing rooms and showers, a crèche and a large floor area on the first floor to be used for almost any activity. The complex is nearing completion and will serve the local community and cater for all the local sports clubs, associations and societies. as well as various functions etc. This complex and pitches were planned, built and part financed by the local community under the guidance of the Tintern Sports Complex committee.
St. Leonard’s also have the use of the pitch and facilities at Dunmain. This is predominantly where all the various teams within St. Leonard’s carry out training sessions. There are also a number of home fixtures played in Dunmain.
At present, St. Leonard’s have the following teams competing within the club;
Ø 2 no. under ten teams
Ø 1 no. under 12, 14, 16 & 18 schoolboys teams
Ø 2 No. Senior teams comprising of an A-Team & B-Team
The senior teams are competing in the Wexford League since the club was founded. There was also a third senior team competing up to a couple of years ago.
The underage structure was re-introduced into the club last season and has performed very well since then.
St. Leonard’s has over seventy senior and U-18 players registered. At the under 10’s to the under 16’s, there are over seventy players registered.
Over the past thirty years, St. Leonard’s have won the Neil O’Sullivan Cup, the Billy Browne Cup as well as runners up spot on at least one occasion. The senior teams have won the 2nd division, division 3A, and won a playoff in the 1st division for promotion to the Premier Division. The club enjoyed two years in the Premier division of the Wexford football league and during this period, Trevor Duffin was honoured with the premier division player of the season.
The youth team also won the Wexford Youth Cup during the 90’s. Last year the newly established under 10’s won a playoff match for the runner up spot in the division.
St. Leonard’s football club is for the most part responsible for there own funding. This includes organizing cabarets, a yearly 5-A-side tournament, various draws, sponsorship and donations by the local business and community and the registration money received by the players. The local community including local business, support St. Leonard’s football magnificently and the club could not exist without them.
